Backyard Chickens

I've kept chickens in my own back garden for a number of years. When I started it was unusual and unfashionable but in the mid-noughties it seems that I'm hip again and more people are discovering the pleasures of a slug-free garden, the cackle of hens when you feed them, your own free-range eggs with - shock - actual flavour and for the bold, the pleasure of raising your own chicks and watching them grow.

For the amateur chicken-keeper like me, the web offers tantalising sources of practical advice from people who obviously know what they are doing. It has been a source of a lot of background information when I've been looking for help. As a professional engineer I've been surprised by the split between expert (i.e. scientifically researched) and practical information. What I hope to do on these pages is not only to provide a resource for anyone interested in the routine keeping of backyard chickens, but also to link it to authoritative sources with references when I can find them.

Most of the information will be general, for anyone interested in chicken-keeping, but since I live in England, information on suppliers, legal and regulatory stuff and so on will mostly be UK-centric.

It's early days for this site and I'll be adding pages as time allows it. Don't expect too much too soon! AT PRESENT THIS SITE IS NOT INTENDED FOR PUBLIC USE, IT'S IN PREPARATION ONLY.
